- This approach utilizes accurate digital technology.
- Color images of IRIS films are acquired as high resolution scans.
- Image processing is used to convert the color images into binary (B&W) images for quantification.
- Quantification is accomplished using image analysis (IA) software.

- A more rudimentary approach to quantification is to print 3" X 6" mylar grids and lay them over the IRIS.
- Marks can be placed in each box where the IRIS coating has been removed and these can be summed to calculate a reasonable estimate of the percentage of coating removed.
- This approach is “Low Tech” but is fairly reliable, with evaluations generally being within +/- 3% or so. [Rabenhorst, M.C. 2012. Simple and Reliable Approach for Quantifying IRIS Tube Data. Soil Sci. Soc. Am. J. 76: 307-308. ]
